"Mary Did You Know" (Mark Lowry/Buddy Greene/Word Music Inc/Rufus Music/ASCAP/©1991)

Song History

In addition to the artists listed, "Mary Did You Know" has been recorded by numerous Pop, Gospel and Country music stars. Some of these include: Clay Aikin, Anne Cochran, Michael Crawford, Helen Baylor, Gary Chapman, Clay Walker, Billy Dean, the Gatlin Brothers, Mark Harris, Jim Horn, Kathy Mattea, Kenny Rogers, Reba McEntire, Wynonna Judd, Sonya Isaacs, Dick Tunney, and Vickie Winans.

Mark Lowry was inspired to write the lyrics in 1984 when he was approached and asked to help compose a musical for the Advent season. Lowry came up with a series of questions he wanted to pose to Mary, the mother of Jesus. For the next six years, Lowry showed his lyric to a number of composers, but none were able to write a tune that satisfied him until harmonica virtuoso Buddy Greene set it in a minor key.

After Lowry's Gaither Vocal Band co-member Michael English recorded "Mary Did You Know?" on his first solo CD (1991 Michael English), the song was re-recorded by several dozen artists. Lowry has recorded several version of the song as well...first as a member of the Gaither Vocal Band on their Christmas CD Still The Greatest Story Ever Told and later for his own solo releases (1998 Mary Did You Know-book/CD single combo, 2000 Just Singing...No Kidding, 2001 The Best Of Mark Lowry, Volume 1, 2001 On Broadway, and 2004 Mary Did You Know).
