Biography

Stancel Allen Ganus was a singer, songwriter and long-time music teacher. He received his early music training at Livingston College in Alabama which is now the University of West Alabama. Stancel was a member of the first generation Ganus Brothers Quartette from Birmingham, Alabama in the late 1920s and early 1930s. He and his brothers went on performance tours and conducted singing schools throughout the southeast.

Stancel composed the music for the song "Redeemed" (also called "I'm Redeemed"). This song was recorded by the Alcoa Quartet on Victor Records in 1927 in what was known as the "Bristol Sessions." The song's chorus was later featured as the final chorus in J. D. Sumner's "Old Country Church" medley and as the bridge for Phil Cross' number one song "I am Redeemed."

S. A. Ganus also sang with several Vaughan and Stamps-Baxter quartets. He later relocated to Lakeland Florida where he continued to teach music.
