History

When Carolina Quartet was formed in 2006, group members included Chris Roberts (tenor), Scott Whitener (lead), Roger Burnett (baritone), Lamar Levi (bass), and David Bruce Murray (keyboards). Roberts, Whitener, and Burnett were former members of the Melody Masters Quartet. A CD titled Big Change released the previous year as a Melody Masters recording was re-branded with the Carolina Quartet name. This release was followed in 2007 by a Christian Country recording titled Faith, Family, & Freedom. In due time, the group name was shortened to Carolina, but the quartet vocal format was maintained.

For the first several years, Carolina did a limited number of concert events, but demand for their appearances steadily increased. The group began promoting concerts in their own churches and other venues in western North and South Carolina. In 2015, the Carolina Quartet became owners of the Carolina Gospel Association concert series in Rutherfordton, NC, an organization that promotes several events per year with major Southern Gospel artists.

Chris Parker replaced Lamar Levi at the bass position in 2016. In 2018, baritone singer Riley Dotson joined the group replacing long-time baritone Roger Burnett. The group soon signed with Berry Hill Records and began expanding their touring schedule with appearances at the National Quartet Convention and other major concert events.

Jon Robertson joined in 2019 to play drums. He initially performed as a supplement to the group's pre-recorded tracks, but soon, the group added a segment in their programs with completely live instruments. Vocalists Chris Parker and Riley Dotson played guitars and vocalist Chris Roberts played keyboard. A supplemental keyboard player, Chris Powell, joined the group in 2020.

Former Kingsmen Quartet drummer Greg Fox replaced Robertson in 2021. Guitarist/vocalist Sam Hoyle made a few appearances with the group in late 2021 and early 2022. Riley Dotson left the group in late 2021. He was later replaced by Andy King.

With the release of Turn: A Legacy Of American Songs in 2022, the group was billed as Carolina The Band. After the departure of Andy King in 2023, guitarist/featured vocalist Mitchell Whisnant began singing vocals full-time while continuing to play guitar.
